The Death Railway

• Also known as Burma railway or the Burma–Siam Railway
• This railway was intended to move men and supplies to the Burmese front where the Japanese were fighting the British, during the 1940’s
• More than 180,000 laborers and 60,000 Allied prisoners of war (POWs) worked on the railway

What can you find there?

• Allied war Grave where 6,982 POWs buried, mostly Australian, British, and Dutch
• The Death War Museum which is a reconstructed POWs thatched detention hut
• Living quarters which comprise raised bamboo bunks running the length of the long hut
• The Bridge of the River Kwai is also located nearby here
